August Charity – United Way Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC)

MRC is a partnership with Richland County School District One and newly added Lexington County School Districts 2 and 5. This volunteer tutoring program aims to assist selected kindergarten, first and second grade students read on grade level by third grade. Volunteer tutors with MRC donate one hour a week to work with students who are identified by their school as needing additional assistance with reading.

Last year, United Way placed over 300 children with volunteer tutors who helped them improve their reading skills and succeed in school. Almost half of South Carolina children are not reading proficiently by third grade. Studies show that children who aren’t reading on grade level by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

To assist with MRC this year, CQS is collecting school supply items for the program. We will be accepting donations at the door.

Recommended School Supply Items:
#2 Pencils
Pocket Folders
Washable Markers
Construction Paper
Notebook paper
Wide rule notebooks
Kids Scissors
Pencil Sharpeners
Multi-Purpose Glue
Glue Sticks
