Derby is cheaper than therapy!  Being a member of CQS is a rewarding experience that takes dedication, determination, and athleticism.

Training Wheel Sessions

We are always looking for girls with skating experience. Derby Training Wheel sessions start every quarter at our COMPOUND!  Email the training committee at Cqstrainingcommittee@gmail.com with any training wheel questions.

You must be 18 years old or older and be able to afford monthly dues.  For insurance purposes, a liability waiver is required before tryouts.  Required gear includes skates, elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads, helmet, and mouth guard (we have limited gear you can borrowe till you get yours).  If you are interested in purchasing skates, we recommend contacting a roller girl for tips on preferred brands.

Derby is a physically demanding sport.  Get in shape!  The more you skate, the better.  You can learn to skate by attending open skate at the Skate Station USA in Lexington (803-356-3500).  Normal rink fees apply.

Monday: 6:30-8:30pm

Friday: 7:30-11:30pm

Saturday 10:30-12:30pm/2:00-5:00pm/ 7:30-11:30pm

Sunday 2:00-5:00 pm

Assessment Skills

Once we assess your skills, we will give you a game plan for being a derby girl.  All girls must pass a skills assessment and rules test before they are allowed to scrimmage with the teams.  Basic skills are listed below.

  • Forward skating
  • Crossovers
  • One-foot glides
  • Derby Stance
  • Skating in a pack
  • Falls
  • Stops
  • Lateral movement
  • Jumping
  • 25 laps in 5 minutes

Expectations

Once you’ve made the team, you can expect to attend at least two practices per week.  We currently practice Sunday, Tuesdays , and Wednesdays.  You will need to purchase your own gear and pay for the upkeep of your equipment.  Dues required each month are currently set at $30.  Bumps and bruises are to be expected, but you will receive amazing support from some tough athletes!

Volunteers

You can get a good perspective of league life and actually see how we work by volunteering!  If you are interested, please email Mal Pacino at malpacinocqs@gmail.com.  Volunteer for a bout production and see the show for free!
